9 o’clock Nasty – Team Player (2022)
At the end of 2021, I was introduced to the self-named “aristocrats of punk” 9 o’clock Nasty. It was that September when I lost my heart to this UK-based trio. Obscure, eclectic and outstanding, 9 o’clock Nasty have a light-hearted side to their music with a bit of comedy, but always profound (even if you only start thinking about it after the seventh time you play a track). While I am enthusiastic about this group, I am not the only one singing their praises. Featured on Sinusoidal Music, Less Than 1000 Followers, YMX, Edgar Allan Poets, Motion News, RGM, and numerous radio stations like Amazing Radio USA, 9 o’clock Nasty is making waves on an internal level. The latest addition to their critically acclaimed repertoire is ’Team Player’.
Following their well-received tracks ‘Darker Star’ and ‘Food on the Floor’, the lads adopt a slightly darker tone with the single ‘Team Player’. Punk-inspired, there remains a distortion and striking starkness to the song; however, an underlying indie tone runs throughout the track. The thing is, while there appears to be a starkness to the song, the lads have you slipping and sliding down a kaleidoscopic sonic slide. Once you hit the bottom, you are left to see pinpricks of light swirling around your head; however, while you twirl about a bit, there is a contrary steadiness that has you standing your ground and shouting along to track.
Constantly evolving, 9 o’clock Nasty once again highlights their sophisticated obscurity in ‘Team Player’. Charismatic vocals pour forth from the analogue arrangement proving that you don’t need fancy stuff to make a mark on listeners. As I said, they can have pinpricks of light swirling about your head…but you’ll love the feeling. ‘Team Player’ does not slither into your cranium, but rather grabs your guts, squeezes and leaves you breathless with goosebumps all over your body.
