9 o’clock Nasty – Smash, Grab & Go (2024)
To me, songs are like relationships. Some are that slow burn where you learn to love them over time, while others you just can’t tolerate. Some pass you by with a longing look, and then there are those that hit you between the eyes with instant attraction – 9 o’clock Nasty’s ‘Smash, Grab & Go’ is one of these. Over time we’ve come to appreciate the UK-based trio 9 o’clock Nasty with their eclectic, enigmatic crash of chaos bound by a profound ribbon. The ups and downs of their rollercoaster singles met by the soothing sincerity lying beneath. Today, they take our breath away with the latest addition to their discography: ‘Smash, Grab & Go’.
The third track from their upcoming album, provisionally entitled This Is Crowland, ‘Smash, Grab & Go’ is a two-minute blast of anarchistic adrenaline. As with ‘Crowland’, an intense depth can be felt through the melody; however, as intense as it may be there is a sense of “well, this is the case…deal with it”. A warning of an emergency, perhaps a quick smash and grab, 9 o’clock Nasty’s new single might not be as genre-diverse as their singles like ‘Unkle Natur’ or ‘Bird of Happiness’ but it is far more attention-grabbing.
Despite being bold and aggressive, 9 o’clock Nasty’s tracks include an underlying sincerity juxtaposing the insanity with insightfulness. ‘Smash, Grab & Go’ is a theme song for any dystopian tale with its profound exploration of identity, society, and the intricacy of authoritarian existentialism. At the same time, the group leave the door open to interpretation offering audiences the chance to conclude the concept. 9 o’clock Nasty explains:
“We made a song that sounds exactly like the adrenaline rush when you realise that life will never be the same. The moment of falling when fear is replaced by action. We made a song about something complex and difficult. Identity. Surveillance. Scrutiny…or maybe it is a song about sending dick pics or about shoplifting… it means whatever you want it to mean.”
Along with the single, 9 o’clock Nasty released an official music video. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel.
