9 o’clock Nasty – Playboy Driver (2025)
It’s been a few months since UK-based legends 9 o’clock Nasty crossed our virtual pages; this by no means means they’ve left our heads – for some reason, they just stick and don’t want to leave. With a brash bang, abrupt jump, and sludge-like insanity, being pulled into the 9 o’clock Nasty universe leaves you entirely changed… and possibly a little disappointed in the reality to which you must return. Today, we pick up our feet, take a deep breath, and head off into that alternate musical dimension with 9 o’clock Nasty’s single, ‘Playboy Driver’.
Following the well-received, genre-diverse full-length album, This Is Crowland, ‘Playboy Driver’ might be borne of the punk aristocrats 9 o’clock Nasty but delves into the realm of hip-hop, alternative rock, classic rock, and then some punkish sentimentalities. Bold, brash, and brimming with raw confidence, one can feel the passion pulsating in ‘Playboy Driver’. Interestingly, as much as it hits you in the chest, it also seemingly holds your hand, drags you along, and has you grinning while being shoved from one musical post to the next. A sense of “wow, this is crazy” attitude, but with an alternative rock veil subduing the anarchy beneath. All in all, it’s another 9 o’clock Nasty tune oozing abrupt vocals, smashing instruments, and sticks in your head with its grungy entrails.
I never in my wildest dreams imagined I would mention 9 o’clock Nasty, Geri Halliwell, Marianne Faithfull and Alain Delon in the same sentence – but there you have it. Inspired by 9 o’clock Nasty’s new single, ‘Playboy Driver’, I found myself revelling in the “scream if you wanna go faster” of Halliwell, while sauntering through the film, La Motocyclette (also known as The Girl on a Motorcycle); imagine Faithfull in a leather catsuit riding a motorbike with Alain Delon being, well, Alain Delon, in a psychedelic haze as Geri Halliwell yells “scream if you wanna go faster” in the background.
Trippy and highly dangerous, but also exciting and brimming with desire, ‘Playboy Driver’ is the ideal theme song for the psychedelic romance, La Motocyclette – whether the 9 o’clock Nasty lads know it or not.
“If you look closely, you can see bare ribs, bond showing through the meat in the torn gold jumpsuit. If you inhale, beneath the heady fragrance of fine cologne, there is a note of blood and death; because a hero can only be a hero when they tear through the fabric of the world and blaze onto the other side…” 9 o’clock Nasty on ‘Playboy Driver’
