9 o’clock Nasty – Hot Disco Shit (2024)

In 1953, Régine Zylberberg claimed to have started the first discothèque in Paris, the Whiskey á Go Go, the aim: to spin records in a packed club without any break in the music; remember, this was 1953. Since then, many discos have left their mark as decadent, indulgent, luxurious, sensational and insatiable places to party. The Playboy Club, Gazzarri’s, London Fog, and the iconic Studio 54 – all places to lose yourselves in a colourful swirl of insanity. 9 o’clock Nasty takes us to the core of sweaty disco madness, with all intoxication included, in their single ‘Hot Disco Shit’.

Following their singles ‘Bad Monkey’ and ‘Dead Pilot’, 9 o’clock Nasty step into their shiny shoes heading off in a funk meets punk direction. On the surface, it’s a glittery smash of colours as people twirl about in a raucous rush of infectious ecstasy. Safe as can be, the bumping about to Motown tunes. Down the vodka and coke (no ice) and head off with your buddies to groove the night away on brightly coloured dance floors. John Travolta and Uma Thurman have nothing on you!

The thing is, just as there is utter, soul-stirring, skin-tingling rapture in the night of funky disco dancing, a darker side swims across the room. The simple line, “party with people you trust”, isn’t just a hint to having an awesome time with mates; it’s a warning.

A, well let’s face it, crap society intensifies fear, vulnerability, despair, pain, frustration, angst, and all the dark desperation of living in uncertain times. The gut-wrenching fear of something terrible happening to you, the raw need for connection (emotionally or physically or both), letting lose on the dancefloor is a breathless escapism, a scream of relief all covered with a funky groove.
