9 o’clock Nasty – Dude, Your Mom’s A Squid? (2023)

One day in the far distant past three individuals from Leicester decided to get together and make music (not that “making music” – get your mind out of the gutter). Seemingly normal at a very quick glance, one would assume something toe-tapping or heart-stopping to ooze from their instruments…well, gut-wrenching is more like it. Chaos ensued, madness reined, a pungent blast of “what the hell was that” hit people between the eyes, and they called it 9 o’clock Nasty. From the super-sexy grittiness of their cover of ‘Sexy Back’ to the spine-chilling Growl and the brain-scrambling ‘Too Cool’, the UK-based trio have mastered the science of outstanding insanity wrapped in a simple song.

Considering 9 o’clock Nasty has our ear and we can’t seem to wrench ourselves away, you’d think we would run out of things to say about the band. Well, sucks to be you because our verbal waterfall is flowing strong. The summer of collaboration, I Am The Unicorn Head joins 9 o’clock Nasty for another dodgy but delightful few minutes of music in ‘Dude, Your Mom’s A Squid?’

Following the brash grittiness of their punk meets grunge single ‘Mood Is Low’, the Unicorns splatter a wistful, whimsical pop sound across Nasty’s abrupt trip-hop in the new ‘Dude, Your Mom’s A Squid?’. Bare and completely vulnerable at its melodic core, 9 o’clock Nasty strips you to your bones with its hard-hitting beats reaching you at your most vulnerable; then I Am The Unicorn Head’s blanket of whimsical alternative pop hugs you close. Wrapped in a hazy ambience of psychedelic otherworldliness, you’re lost on a floating cloud of symphonic fuzziness taking a deep breath of relief. It’s that “damn, this is relaxing” deep breath you’re supposed to experience when meditating but never quite reach there.

Quirky, eclectic and obscure to say the least, ‘Dude, Your Mom’s A Squid?’ is that brief moment of hedonistic clarity before falling down a mire of confusion.
