7KY ft Avonlea – Terrible Things (2022)

7KY and Avonlea bring the story of two people who meet and have the most euphoric one-night stand of their lives through the sounds of ‘Terrible Things’. Told through a first-person perspective, the single has you tilting your head to the lyrics that delve into the thoughts and perspectives of two people who embrace a momentary connection and the knowledge that things end with the dawn. A different take on human connections, the avant-garde movement of the music merges dream pop, RnB and electronic pop to swell with the euphoria of the moment.

The single started life as a joke between 7KY and his co-writer Bret Martin, but soon spiralled as they bounced lyrics off each other. Once the lyrics had been written, they tried out different instruments to fit before showing Avonlea, who loved the song and quickly recorded her part. The combination of all their talents allows the single to effortlessly paint the scene through a kaleidoscope of sonic colours.

‘Terrible Things’ softly opens with an almost ambient flow that floats over the shuffling beats. There is a twilight vibe to the opening of the track that drops for a heated flow with the deep beat. The melody is a wonderful mixture of hazy electronic tones and deep beats that bring a touch of RnB to the soundscape. Through the music you can feel the tender tendrils of euphoria slowly making their way into your senses. This draws you into the movement, from twilight to late night, of the melody. It is a rather masterful melody that takes you through the night of the single, while adding a touch of tenderness to the haze of euphoria.

While the melody keeps you moving through the heat and emotion of the moment, 7KY and Avonlea’s vocals entwine and dance through your ears. Avonlea opens the track with a really catchy line that is echoed by 7KY. Their performances are almost whispers in the dark that bring an intimate heat which perfectly matches the moment of the track. On the chorus, their vocals join for a burst of glittering emotion, as they connect and mutually unleash their demons. As the single progresses, the lyrics deepen the connection between the two, but there is a knowledge that this connection only lasts until the sun comes up. It is an amazing sonic expression of a single night together that has been beautifully crafted.
