5th PROJEKT – Vagabond (2022)

Described by Neal Moogk-Soulis at Imprint student newspaper as “one great kaleidoscopic orgy of sound”, Canada-based duo 5th PROJEKT takes you to another level of being with their music. Merging elements of alternative rock, grunge, art-rock and synth-rock, Tara Rice (vocals, guitar, bass and drums) and Skodt McNalty (guitars and synth) effortlessly skip across the rock genres (and sub-genres) within a cinematic soundscape. Already an established name in Canada, 5th PROJEKT’s music has received airtime on college radios across Canada and received award nominations from The Ontario Independent Music Awards, The Toronto Independent Music Awards and The Orange Country Music Awards. Moreover, the band has captivated audiences at festivals like Indie Week, Canadian Music Week and NXNE. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Vagabond’.

Following their well-received single ‘Dreams’, ‘Vagabond’ is a psychedelic journey across a hazy mist of synths, guitars, dreamy bass and haunting vocals. Interestingly enough, while there is a whimsical element to ‘Vagabond’, the obscurity of the arrangement makes it an organised chaos. Raw, honest and presenting an almost palpable grittiness, 5th PROJEKT reach into your soul and brings out your most intimate thoughts and feelings.

Years in the making, ‘Vagabond’ was inspired by Rice and McNalty’s journey on the Camino Santiago de Compostela – a trail from the south of France, across Spain to the Atlantic Ocean. Inspirational and moving, this hiking experience has been called motivational, meditative and a journey of self-discovery. 5th PROJEKT explains that “living out of a backpack for over a month really changes your perspective on life and what you truly need…this is the path of the Vagabond who represents all of us, and the journey is both wistful and triumphant.”

I cannot say I am one to head off on a hike to refine and purify my self-perspective, but ‘Vagabond’ definitely captures the mystical sense of inner peace.
