Rita De Los Angeles – Home Is Where The Heart Is (2024)

Hailing from Los Angeles, USA but currently residing in Cologne, Germany, singer-songwriter Rita De Los Angeles is an international musical force spanning two continents and several years in the music industry. Describing her music as “guitar-driven songs featuring a mix of rock, pop, and a sprinkle of outlaw country”, De Los Angeles might fit comfortably in the Americana genre; then again, she pushes the boundaries of country music just as she pushes conventionalism in her life. Inspired by life in its entirety, her melodies capture the core of humanity in fun, infectious but equally profound symphonies. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Home Is Where The Heart Is’.

On the heels of her well-received single ‘Slow Dancing’, ‘Home Is Where The Heart Is’ is a traditional country love song flecked with pop and wrapped in an indie-pop haze. Soft, soothing and simplistic, the acoustic-inspired track is a laidback melody – easy to listen to and sing along. Yet, while the minimalist combination of guitars and percussion is smile-inducing, there is a kaleidoscopic poignancy lingering in the moving melody.

Self-produced and recorded, ‘Home Is Where The Heart Is’ is a beautifully layered and textured melody; however, there is a hidden melancholy woven into the track. With a constant “two-sidedness”, the rich vocals also find the duality of joyful love and desperate sadness. Finding love and being lost in a comfortable romance, but also struggling with breaking other peoples’ hearts because of her same-sex marriage. Rita De Los Angeles explains:

“The song is inspired by both the opportunities and struggles of having my heart in two places. When I used to hear the saying, ‘home is where the heart is’, I always thought it was a tacky phrase. Now, I feel like I fully understand what it means, and it doesn’t feel so tacky to me. The catalyst for my transatlantic move was about meeting my wife 22 years ago and all the incredible energy one feels when you fall in love, but to add the same-sex marriage ban aspect to it, I ended up breaking a lot of hearts… even my own because my heart always felt like it was in two places. The song has become an affirmation that home is wherever I am…”
