Melina Hazewood – Simple Desire (2024)

Despite being under the age of 20, singer-songwriter Melina Hazewood is turning heads on an international level with her powerful and intimate music. While her songs are melodically moving, it is the themes and lyrics that add pure forcefulness to Hazewood. Eager to share new experiences, stories and tales of the human spirit, this young songstress is a sophisticated artist mature beyond her years. I came across Melina Hazewood with her sophomore single ‘Dear Boy’ and, as with the rest of the world, I immediately fell in love. Come with me as I enjoy her most recent release, ‘Simple Desire’.

Following the critically acclaimed ‘Dear Boy’ and ‘Memories Are Now Ghosts’, ‘Simple Desire’ is Hazewood’s fourth single in 2024. In a wonderful pool of piano, acoustic guitar, subdued percussion and strings, listeners swim through a simplistic tune; however, while a barebones starkness exists the track brims with kaleidoscopic complexity. Pure folk without too many bells and whistles, the single is a charming breath of air… then again, in its intricacy, lilts of vulnerability and heartache linger in its tender warmth.

In my opinion, ‘Simple Desire’ is a silky grin of smiles and tears, but it is Hazewood’s voice that ups the ante. In a soft, soothing, almost quiet way, Hazewood weaves her distinctive vocals through the track. Interestingly, while her voice is mature and elegantly sophisticated, youthful exuberance shimmers in its innocent clarity. Hazewood explains:

“This song is about the purity and delicate beauty of new love. It talks about the exciting early stages of a relationship and how magical it feels to experience this innocently powerful affection; reflecting the intensity of life that runs through each of us and connects us with all of the world. It’s about the discovery of a shared intimate connection. I wrote this song on a bright summer’s day and was inspired by the new life and beginnings that the early summer brings and the energy and desire that nature represents…”
